Isn't that a great moment? The one where you realize they learn stuff you didn't even know they were learning.

There are now acres and acres of things my two teens know that I don't but I remember the first times I realized they were reading and absorbing on their own and every morsel of knowledge didn't go through me first.

It's a wonderful thing. :)

In the beginning I worried daily about how much they learn. Noah still has some MAJOR issues with math, so we are taking it day by day. He loves to read, and tell stories. Noah would prefer to make imaginary towns with his Start Wars, Army, and other sorted guys. He learns through imagination. On the other end of the spectrum I have Christopher, he prefers the computer. Looking stuff up (just for fun), and when he get's fixated on a topic he will study it for days. We are a mix of different home school styles. I sure could not get the boys to sit at the table and do work all day.

ha,ha! As I typed this Christopher walked in and informed Ian and I that an Emperor penguin weighs more then his brother. um, OK, I didn't even know we learned about penguins...

You know Not June I am your greatest (non-athletic) supporter and encouraged your embracing Alice Cooper as your savior long before this great experiment began. Just please do not lose site of the Trivium. Sister Miriam Joseph would never forgive you. Fort Hunt Elementary lives wtihin us all.

[...] If you go to the links above, you can see a fascinating difference in the book covers, from culture to culture. I think I like the British covers best, with one tiny human figure in stark shadow on a distant ridge, with the full-color, elegant arrows of his trade dominating every foreground. (Shoutout to COD: tell Breck there’s plenty of swordplay too, not just archery. Shoutout to NotJC: tell Simon to read these books and then write his own!) [...]

Hehe, this post reminds me of the time, about a year into homeschooling, I walked into the living room and found Daughter and her friends "playing" school.

The had set up a classroom, created an attendance list and even made up spelling and math worksheets for each other. Daughter was having a ball.

I was so confused. We pulled Daughter out of school because she hated it, she wasn't progressing and she was emotionally suffering.

When I asked what they were doing she told me, "We're just playing a game."

Dumpster diving! That must have made you proud. ;)

Sounds like their day was full. My kids do more than just computer gaming, of course, but it sure seems like that's all they do. We actually have a 2 hour time limit for internet games. They can have more computer time if they are doing non-game things like Rosetta Stone Spanish, writing, creating things on Paint, etc.

You know what's funny? We've been having some serious PUPD (periodic unschooling panic disorder) around here; I've been meaning to post about it. My eldest is 16 and told me yesterday that he thinks he's never going to learn everything he "needs" to learn in two years for college. One of the things we're doing is a CLEP course that will be the beginnings of his college credits, but he felt like it wasn't enough. So, I pulled up the World Book course of study for high school and printed it out. After seeing that, he relaxed a bit because he saw that even though we don't "do" school, he's covered a whole lot of what the system says he should.

Oh, and in our spare time? Yesterday, Brad played 'ukulele, researched a new pick up (for his instrument, not to drive), emailed several people, worked on his website, mowed a path through our field so that he and his brother could drive the nitrous remote control car, problem solved starting said car, discussed the economy with me, and announced that he'd like to start dumpster diving (never a dull moment!). My youngest spent the better part of the day figuring out how to craft a sword from wood and conduit, drove the nitrous car, and read Tolkien.
