It’s Official! Homeschoolers Aren’t Weird Anymore

The official word on homeschoolers — not weird. Well, if you believe the Boston Globe they aren’t. I’m still not convinced. I think we’re pretty weird.  In the article, Jack Klenk, director of the Office of Non-Public Education at the US Department of Education, was quoted as saying:

“I call it the hybridization of education.”

Ooooh. Smart man.

Then Bill Heuer, treasurer and executive board member for the 20-year-old Massachusetts Home Learning Association, was quoted as saying:

“Twenty years ago, the public impression of home-schoolers was that they were strange, odd, weird, whatever word you want to use,” said Heuer. “I think people feel a lot more confident, there’s a lot more support groups, there’s a lot more opportunities now.”

Well, I’m thinking that was more like 20 months ago, but who’s counting?

I still think it is nice that more mainstream articles are portraying homeschooling as a valid choice rather than some oddball thing people do that will completely ruin their children and ultimately our country.

I like it better when they all thought we were weird. They left us alone back then.

COD, for the most part, it seems to me that they still leave us alone. I can see that changing if the numbers ever really become significant. My naive dream would be that “they” will realize that there is not one right way to educate.

I liked your take on the article — the huge scoop that we don’t keep our kids inside all the time. Duh.

Well, the NEA won’t be happy about this at all.

Also…apparently these people haven’t been hanging around my house, where ‘weird, strange, & odd’ is the norm.

And didn’t a homeschooler just win the Heisman trophy? Why, yes,I think he did! That’s pretty good press, too.

[...] I was browsing through some of my favorite blogs, and one caught my eye over at “These Go To Eleven“…she quotes an article in “The Boston Globe”. It’s about [...]

Being normal is NO fun! When we fist started hs’ing, an acquaintance told me that she was surprised that we were hs’ing because we “were so normal.” Seems that she thought all hs’ers were either religious fanatics or hippies living in busses at the side of the road.

Got something to say?
