Dr. Phil’s Great School Debate (ugh, I can’t believe I’m doing this…)

I wasn’t going to post about Dr. Phil’s recent show, “The Great School Debate” that aired yesterday, because I didn’t think I could be objective, and nobody wants to read my rants. Fortunately, Susan at Imperfect Genius has this magical quality of being able to beautifully articulate my thoughts so I don’t have to! Please read her post about the show if you have a chance.

There is one thing I want to post that really bugs me. I submitted the following comment on the message board for Dr. Phil’s show. I’m guessing they will either edit out the part of my post pointing out their shady statistics, or they will not publish my post at all.  We shall see…

I think Dayna did a great job. The show wasn’t nearly as negative toward homeschooling as I thought it would be from the trailer.

However, unschooling is not what Dr. Phil portrayed it to be. I’m disappointed, but not surprised by the show. As a new homeschooler, I find myself leaning more and more toward unschooling. I have personally seen it work for my sister’s youngest son (who just started college at a major university (on a full scholarship) after being unschooled since 2nd grade).

By the way, has anyone noticed that they used an interesting “method” to calculate the percentages on the poll? It appears they are using a formula of 100 minus all the other results to determine the percent for the “public school” option on the poll. Hmmmmmm. Intentional? It results in all the decimal values of the other options being “added” to the “public school” option, inflating it by as much as 3%!!

I’m enjoying all the blog posts around the internet today about this show. I learn more every day about homeschooling and unschooling so that I can make INFORMED decisions. Too bad Dr. Phil didn’t do his homework. :(

(p.s. within minutes of publishing this post, I received the first spam comment to this blog I’ve had in ages!!)

He misses lunch

OK, I lied. I do have something to say (but not much, mind you!).

Conversation another mom and I had at a soccer game (a mom with whom I co-taught our sons’ Hands On Science class after school last fall):

Her: So how’s homeschooling going?

Me: Great! I asked Alvin the other day what he misses most about school (if anything) and he said he really misses lunch.

Her: Awwwwww. He misses hanging out with his friends and having that social time, huh?

Me: No, actually he misses LUNCH. He wants sloppy joes and cheese sticks. I said we could handle that!

**evil grin**

I’m A Slug

Yep. It’s official. I’m a slug.

Not that I had any great reader following, but the very few of you who do check in once-in-a-while must be sorely disappointed. The problem is, I have nothing interesting to say. The other problem is that I’m a terrible perfectionist, so often I do NOTHING rather than something half-assed.

Oh, and I’m quickly becoming an unschooler. I knew it would happen! :)

BTW, I’m a little freaked out that in the last couple of weeks some of my photos from this blog are coming up in Google image searches.  I wish I knew how to get them off of there (and why they started appearing there!).  Ugh.

Ninja Invasion

This year, all three kids wanted to be Ninjas. We only had one Ninja last year.

Note that Theodore (far right) is always in character for anything he does. He takes his job as ninja very seriously.

I really miss the days when I made their costumes and they never complained about what I chose. My favorite year was the one when I made them all ant costumes. After all, they are an awful lot like a little army of ants sometimes.

And here are the pumpkins. This year, Simon (ds 9) did his pumpkin by himself. It’s the skull one, and I think he did a fantastic job.

Now, if I could just find a way to destroy each of their SIX POUND bags of candy (yes, we weighed them!) …
